Horse Chestnut for tired heavy legs

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granted a Traditional Herbal Registration Certificate for the traditional herbal medicinal product Horse Chestnut tablets (Traditional Herbal Registration number: THR 21710/0012).
This product is available without prescription.

The active ingredient of Horse Chestnut tablets comes from the seeds of Horse Chestnut tree, which is also known as Aesculus hippocastanum L.

Horse Chestnut tablets is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the relief of the symptoms associated with minor venous insufficiency and varicose veins, such as tired heavy legs, pain, cramps and swelling, based on traditional use only.



Before you take this product


DO NOT TAKE this product if you:
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are allergic to Horse chestnut or to any of the ingredients listed below (see Product description below)
  • are under 18 years of age
WARNING
It is important you consult a doctor before starting or continuing to use this product if you suffer from or develop leg ulcers, which can arise on your lower legs as a result of varicose veins.

Tell your doctor or qualified healthcare practitioner if you notice inflammation of the skin, if you have abnormally hard areas of skin with or without pain or sudden swelling of one or both legs


Consult a doctor or a qualified healthcare practitioner if you have:
  • heart problems
  • kidney problems


Dosage

Adults and the elderly

Take 1 tablet two times daily immediately after food. Swallow the tablet whole with some water.  
To ensure an increase in the amount of urine, adequate fluid intake is required during the treatment.
Do not exceed the stated dose.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although the frequency is not known.

Possible side effects are:
  • Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache and vertigo.
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity of the skin, itching, rash, erythema and eczema).
 If any of the above side effects become serious or if you experience any other side effects not listed above, consult your doctor or a qualified healthcare practitioner.


Product description

Each tablet contains 272 mg-332mg of extract (as dry extract) from Horse Chestnut seed, corresponding to 60mg of Triterpene glycosides calculated as aescin.

Extraction solvent: Ethanol 80% v/v.

This product also contains the following inactive ingredients:
Silica colloidal anhydrous, calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate.
Tablet coating: Hypromellose, triacetin, talc, sodium alginate, stearic acid, ethylcellulose, ammonium hydroxide, medium chain triglycerides, oleic acid, purified water (volatile).
